This is a video of the stages it took to make the AP button for my magazine. I used the programme 'camstudio' to video the progression. I managed to create this piece of work in simple steps. Involving creating different shapes and then adding the effects to them. The gradient tool was useful as it conforms to the colour scheme of my magazine.

Double Page Spreads

Contents pg first draft

Front Cover Draft

This is my first draft for my front cover.
It conforms to the layout of my sketches as well as my intended colour scheme. I have been consistent with the genre of music which my magazine conforms to by using iconic bands in my sell lines. I used the font 'impact' for my main sell line as I wanted it to be the most eyecatching piece of text on the page; even more so than my magazine name as I'm acknowledging that my audience will already know what it's called if they're regular buyers of my magazine. By adding a sell line of a free poster is a major selling point as it conforms to the uses and gratifications theory as people like receiving free stuff.

Model Release

This document is a contract which I have requested my model to sign. It means that I have full control over the release of the pictures and that I don't have to be influenced by them for choice of photo. This contract is really effective for my work as without it I wouldn't be able to have free reign on the photo's I've taken as it's common for the model to have a preference for what picture should be used. This piece of material makes their opinion irrelevant and gives me final say.

Double Page Spreads

I have chosen to design three double page spreads. The first is a introductory page which willl have a full bleed image of my artist on the left hand side. Whilst on the right there will be a small introductory paragraph. My title is 'Mia on Music' as my artists name is 'Mia Shaw' and the aliterative title is catchy and will hopefully be memorable for the audience. The topic of the article is entertainment as well as informative.

My second page has a pull quote on the left hand side and a picture below it. The main article then starts on the right and will flow in to a interview. The title of this page is 'Shaw'ly Not. This is a play on words of my artists name again to help the audience remember her and to give a quirky side to the article.

My last page as just a basic layout as this will hold the bulk of the article. There are spaces for pictures, but most of the information will be on this page. That is why it doesn't have a title as it's just a follow on.

Contents Page Design

This is my Contents Page design. I have used a similar layout to NME as it seemed suitable. However now that I have started to make my contents page in adobe photoshop I have made some changes as it seemed to suit better.

Front Cover Draft

This is my front cover draft for my magazine. This will be a guide for when I come to making my magazine. I have included sell lines and a artist time line. I haven't annotated the draft with a colour scheme as I'm not completely sure which house style I want to go for yet.

Sell Line Ideas

Sell line Ideas for my Magazine. These are informative and entertaining plugs that'll hopefully attract my target audience. They are advertising about the bands that my audience will like and recognise. By using alliteration, assonance and various other language techniques I can help my sell lines stick in my readers mind as well as giving them a certain rhythm when being read which will effectively be more memorable.

Name Ideas

Name Ideas

These are the name ideas I have come up with for my magazine. They all have connoations of music or conform to the genre to which I intend my magazine to be. Some of the names I have chosen suit my genre of music more as they relate better, for example; 'Amplified' implies that the music is loud. I think this name suits my magazine as the style of Indie can be loud and outrageous. I also like the name 'Indiestructable' as it's taking a  powerful adjective and incorporting a pun into its title.

Colour Connotations

Colour connotations are important as they display meaning and add feeling to the text. Below are some colour connotations of the colours that will probably feature in my magazine. I used this website to help me find a detailed description of the different connotations of colours: http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/color-meaning.html

Black
Black has the connotations of power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery.
Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown (black holes). It usually has a negative conections (blacklist, black humour, 'black death'). Black also signifies strength and authority; it is seen to be a very formal, elegant, and prominent colour (black tie, black Porshe). Black is also considered the symbol of grief.
Black can define distance and perspective, hpwever a black background reduces readability. Black clothing can make you look thinner. Black is used as a background to make bright colours stand out. When black is  linked with red or orange it portrays a very aggressive colour scheme.

Red
Red is the colour of fire and blood, so it is identified with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.
Red is capable of portraying powerful emotions. It relates to the different systems in the body like the metabolism, respiration rate, blood pressure. It's easily noticed, which is why stop signs, stoplights, and fire equipment are often painted red. Traditionally red is used to signify courage. It is a colour found in many national flags, (England, Japan, Italy, France, America, Germany) all involved in the world wars which denotes the military and power influence.
Red can make texts and images stand out. It's often used in marketing or advertising as its bold and makes the 'Buy Now' or 'Click Here' buttons on Internet banners and websites more visible. Furthermore in advertising, red is often used to arouse erotic feelings (red lips, red nails, red-light districts, 'Lady in Red', etc). However in contrast red is commonly used to indicate danger (high voltage signs, traffic lights).
Light red signifies joy, sexuality, passion, sensitivity, and love.
Pink represents romance, love, and friendship. It denotes feminine qualities and passiveness.
Dark red suggests, willpower, rage, anger, leadership, courage, longing, malice, and wrath.
Brown is associated with stability and denotes masculine qualities.
Reddish-brown is connected with Autumn.

Orange
Orangeis a combination of the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It  has connotations of  joy, sunshine, and exotic destinations. Orange can highlight  enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.
Orange is a very hot colour, so it gives the sensation of heat. Nevertheless, orange is not as aggressive as red. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus colour, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Orange is the colour of fall and harvest. In heraldry, orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Orange is very effective for promoting food products and toys.
Dark orange can mean deceit and distrust.
Red-orange corresponds to desire, sexual passion, pleasure, domination, aggression, and thirst for action.
Gold evokes the feeling of prestige. The meaning of gold is illumination, wisdom, and wealth. Gold often symbolizes high quality.

Yellow
Yellow is the colour of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.
Yellow creates a warming effect, makes people cheerful, helps to stimulate mental activity, and generates muscle energy. Yellow is often identified with food. Bright yellow grabs the audiences attention, which is the reason taxi's are painted this colour. However if seen too much, yellow may have a disturbing effect; apparently babies cry more in yellow rooms. Yellow is normally noticed first when placed against black; this combination is often used to issue a warning - the hazardous sign for corrosion. Yellow indicates honour and loyalty, it is often used to display class and status, it is popularly used to highlight royalty. Yellow has been connected with cowardice as it is a soft colour.
Yellow promotes children's products and items related to leisure. Yellow is very effective for attracting attention, so use it to highlight the most important elements of your design. Men usually perceive yellow as a very playful, 'childish' colour, so it is not used when selling masculine, expensive products to men – nobody will buy a yellow business suit or a yellow Mercedes.
Dull (dingy) yellow represents caution, decay, sickness, and jealousy.
Light yellow is associated with intellect, freshness, and joy.

Green
Green is the colour of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional connections with safety; wait for the green man when crossing the road. Dark green is also commonly associated with money; the american dollars.
Green has great healing power as it is the most restful colour for the human eye; it can improve vision. Green suggests stability and endurance. Green can highlight hope and growth.
Green is used to indicate safety when advertising medicines as its reassuring for the audience. Green is related to nature, so it to promotes eco-friendly products.
Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional colour of peace.

Blue
Blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It connotates trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.
Blue is considered good for the mind and body as it slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Blue is heavily connected with tranquillity and calmness. Blue can be used to promote products and services related to cleanliness (water purification filters, cleaning liquids), air and sky (airlines, airports, air conditioners), water and sea (sea voyages, mineral water). Blue is associated with consciousness and intellect. Blue also suggests precision when promoting high-tech products; blue-ray.
Blue is a masculine colour; according to studies, it is highly accepted among males, which is why baby boys are aften dressd in blue.
Blue supresses appetite therefore it's not commonly used when advertising food. Blue-yellow-red is a perfect colour scheme for a superhero as it highlights power and high impact.
Light blue is associated with health, healing, tranquillity, understanding, and softness.
Dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness.

Purple:
Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. It conveys wealth and extravagance. Purple is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic.
According to surveys, almost 75 percent of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to all other colours. Purple is a very rare colour in nature; some people consider it to be artificial.
Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design. You can use bright purple when promoting children's products.
Light purple evokes romantic and nostalgic feelings.
Dark purple evokes gloom and sad feelings. It can cause frustration.

White
White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection.
White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive connotation. White can represent a successful beginning. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.
In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the colour of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. White is an appropriate colour for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, so you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

Similar Product Research Analysis

I've created a powerpoint which displays analysis of a Front Cover, Contents and Double Page Spreads. I did three for each and tried to be as thorough as possible. By doing this analysis I've learnt what to look for when building up the foundaions of a magazine and what to expect from differet genres. Hopefully this will aid me when I come to making my own magazine as by analyising these I've had a tutorial on what to do and how the conventions restrict any new developments or unique qualities I may wish to add.

Preliminary Task

The first task I started in order to make my magazine was a preliminary piece of work. This is basically a draft version of a simpler magazine. This means I am better prepared to create a magazine when I come to do it later on in the year.
Firstly I had to think of a name for my magazine and it had to be relevant to 'Haydon School' as the criteria was school related. Therefore the name I picked was 'Haydon At Home' as I thought it was a friendly name and the alliterative title was quite catchy.
After I'd thought of a name I started to sketch out my idea of a front page and a contents. I wanted my magazine to cover all areas of the school from sport, to teachers and exam results. My front cover image is of a boy spinning a basketball on his finger looking straight at the camera, this is biggest story in my magazine. I added a few plugs around the side of the picture.
After I'd designed my front cover, I took the pictures I'd need for my front cover.
Once I'd taken my front cover pictures I then designed my
contents page in a easy to read layout splitting the pictures and page numbers to give variety. Once I'd designed my contents page, I took more pictures that were suitable for it to highlight the different features within my magazine.
I'd designed my magazine so then I made it on photoshop. I tried to keep it as similar to my desings as possible however when I'd done it I decided that I didn't like my contents layout as much as I thought I would originally. Therefore I changed where the pictures and texts would be. My front cover however is faily similar to my design. I tried to keep within the school colour scheme of blue and yellow as they're relevant colours to the school. The text is bold and easy to read.  My image on the front cover is a full bleed image of a mid-close up of a boy spinning a basketball on his finger. This represents the main story within my magazine.
